Welcome to my website on the analysis of Animal Farm by George Orwell. Below is a short introduction about the novel, and there will be more details about individual characters and events of the novel, as well as a short biography about the author.
Animal farm - a fairy story?
Animal Farm, a classic novel by George Orwell (1945), was a satire that represented the Russian Communism and Revolution of 1917 including its aftermath, up until the WWII. As the author has stated, that each character, object and event is an allegory of an equivalent in history. For example, Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin; Snowball represents Leon Trotsky; the expelling of Mr. Jones represents the capture and killing of the Tsar (Russian King); and so on.
Personally, I enjoyed reading this short novel as just a fairy tale about intelligent, talking animals; but also looking at and thinking about the historical events that are associated with this novel. Throughout the novel, it was very interesting to see how the author developed the story and the plot, especially at some of the most crucial turning points of the story. Although Animal Farm was published in 1945, Orwell had actually finished writing it one year earlier in 1944. The delay was due to the fact that this novel was too obvious to anyone at the time that it resembled the Soviet Union. In fact, the excuse for not publishing it was that it would directly humiliate the Soviet Union, which had been a close ally during the WWII. However, the novel was only published in some countries due to the powers-that-be, that is trying to prevent Stalin's evil deeds from being exposed. |
